A Beautiful Treasure

We say we watch sunsets because their beautiful. But when I look at a sunset {and I hope I’m not the only crazy one}, I kind of subconsciously wish that by staring at it long and hard I could somehow soak in some of it’s soft brilliance. I feel that way with a lot of beautiful things. The glow of the last rays of evening light. The mystery of moonlight. The rich, sweet, savory smell of the woods. The faithfulness of the geese flying overhead. The grace and agility of the leaping deer. The power of a thunderstorm. The soft hush of snow.

And it’s not just in nature either. There’s precious moments when people display this beauty too. And when I’m blessed to witness them, they somehow leave me thirsty for more. The encouraging word. The caring touch. The heartfelt worship.

It makes my heart ache.

It makes me long for the day when we will be surrounded by pure beauty. when we will be beautiful. when we’ll see the Creator of beauty Himself.

What if you and I would stare at His beauty now? After all,  His creation is only a dim reflection of His beauty. glory. purity. majesty. power. splendor.

Jesus, fill us up. Let people look at Your Church and see Your beauty filling us. Let the way we live allow people to look past us {and all our shortcomings, disagreements, and two-facedness} to see You. You are it.  You are full of  love. mystery. faithfulness. grace. power. peace. You are that pure beauty we’re craving. And this is what we were made to do. this is what Your Church was built for. and this is what our souls long to accomplish. to display Your beauty.

Open our eyes to more of You, God. Let us gaze at Your beauty. And shows us how to reflect Your beauty here and now.

For God, who said, ‘Let there be light in the darkness,’ has made this light shine in our hearts so we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ.

We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves.” (NLT) 2 Corinthians 4:6-7
